Essaouira, Morocco - "The enclosed"

Essaouira is a picturesque walled harbor town with a historic medina and the Mogador fortress built by the Portuguese in the 16th century, around 3 hours from Marrakech. The inhabitants traditionally live from fishing, and things are generally much quieter and more tranquil here. The strong winds also make Essaouira a popular destination for kite surfers.
The entire old town (medina) of Essaouira, with its atypical chessboard-like street layout, was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001.
In 2004, Ridley Scott reconstructed the medieval Jerusalem here for his film “Kingdom of Heaven”.
Essaouira was also one of the filming locations for the fantasy series Game of Thrones (season 3, 2013). Parts of the filming for the movie John Wick: Chapter 3 took place in Essaouira.
